It started with an internal whisper while eating lunch at one of my favorite cafes.
I had been thinking about expanding my work and wondering what to do.
When I internally heard, Go home. The answer is there.
I walked in, laid my belongings on the dining table and noticed a fax. ‘Remember those days?’
My roommate entered the room and said, “Hey, I laid that there for you. I think you should check it out.”
It was an ad from a hypnosis clinic promoting hypnosis for weight loss and smoking.
I got down-my-spine chills.
I knew that I was supposed to work there.
In fact, in my mind, there was no doubt that I would work there!
Without giving it another thought, I called the clinic.
The Calls
When the lady answered the phone, I told her I’d like to work there. She then proceeded to tell me her parents were out of town but she would take my information.
I let her know that, I knew, I was supposed to work there. She let out an uncomfortable laugh.
When I finally did get to talk with one of the owners, I again stated that I knew I was meant to work there. He seemed unsure. His uncertainty didn’t dissuade me.
I began spouting off my credentials. He said he would need to talk with his wife. I immediately said, “I’d love to talk with your wife.”
Finally, after a couple of weeks, I got to talk with his wife.
Again, I stated that I knew I was meant to work there. And once again I felt hesitation on the other end. But I didn’t let that stop me. I told her I’d love to meet with her in person. After some persuasion, she said okay.
The Meeting
I get there and she’s not there, her husband is. He said that something came up unexpectedly. But he would lead the meeting.
Although surprised by her absence, I quickly let it go and told myself, you’ve got this.
Friend, I held steadfast. I knew that Spirit nudged me here, so here is where I’m meant to be.
Although I know I impressed him with my combination of teaching, hypnosis and neurolinguistic background, he kindly told me they weren’t in a position to hire. Without missing a beat, I said, “I’ll volunteer for a month. I’ll create a holiday theme to teach and provide hypnosis sessions. If you don’t like my work, no hard feelings.”
His expression and speechlessness said it all. Finally, after several long minutes, he talked. With an excited pitch and a big smile, he said he would speak with his wife and get back to me.
Within a day of talking with him, his wife called me and asked to meet.
My Foot In the Door
We hit it off.
Friend, with my foot in the door, I went to town.
The clients loved me and so did the owners, and I loved working there.
I ended up working there for about a year.
It was wonderful.
Just the Beginning
Little did I know that working there wasn’t the end goal.
You see, it was there that I was first asked to work one-on-one with folks.
As if it were yesterday, I remember a client coming up to me and asking if I would be her coach. I asked her what a coach was. She responded that it was someone like me who helps people.
Within days I had another client ask me to work with him one-on-one.
And so…my mentoring practice began.
As they say, the rest is history.
Dont Doubt Life-Changing Whispers
I wonder where my life would be today if I hadn’t listened to that whisper.
What if I had allowed doubt to drown out that whisper - who do you think you are, you’ve never worked in a hypnosis clinic - blah, blah, blah.
Dear, if you ever find that you’re being whispered to but doubts are keeping you from listening, remember you don’t have to ignore your doubts.
You just can’t allow them to guide you.
Look at them with compassion. Talk to your doubts the way you would talk with a friend’s doubts. You wouldn’t give up on your friend. But you would provide a comforting, encouraging ear.
Don’t let your doubts guide you.
Let your whisper ‘spirit self’ guide you.
You never know, that whisper may change your life.
